Syllabus 4.5 updates
This website is created to provide support to users of the
Training for ECDL Manual Syllabus 4.0 and affects:
- Module 1 - Basic Concepts of IT
- Module 2 - Using the Computer and Managing Files
- Module 7 - Information and Communication
The Syllabus references for Module 1 are
affected by the 4.5 changes as follows:
- Section 1.3 (Software) has been removed and replaced with 1.3 Basic
System Maintenance
- Section 1.4 (Information Networks) has been removed and replaced by 1.4
System Interrogation
- Section 1.6 has a new item inserted 1.6.1.2 Know where to find
information on health and safety laws and guidelines that affect the use of
IT.
The Syllabus references for Module 2 affected
by the 4.5 changes are as follows:
- Section 2.1, syllabus reference 2.1.1.1 has been merged with 2.1.1.2 (Start
the computer merged with Shut down the computer using an appropriate
routine)
- Section 2.1 a new item has been included in reference 2.1.1.1 (Understand
how to set up and use a work station safely including: equipment, layout,
health and safety issues to self and others, and laws and guidelines that
affect the use of IT)
The Syllabus references for Module 7 affected
by the 4.5 changes are as follows:
- Section 7.4 syllabus reference 7.4.1.2 has been amended to include 'disadvantages'
(in addition to advantages) and the word 'different'.
'Additional functions such as formatting options, attachment restrictions'
and 'memory space' have also been added. The revised syllabus
reference now reads: Understand the advantages
and disadvantages of different e-mail systems
such as: speed of delivery, low cost, additional functions
such as formatting options, attachment restrictions,
memory space and the flexibility of
using a Web-based e-mail account in different locations.
- Section 7.4 syllabus reference 7.4.1.3 has been amended to include
'text formatting techniques'. This refers to font, size,
colour, bullets and indents. The revised syllabus now reads:
understand the importance of network etiquette (netiquette) such
as: using accurate descriptions in e-mail message subject fields, brevity in
e-mail responses, spell checking outgoing e-mail and
text formatting techniques.
- Section 7.4 syllabus reference 7.4.2.1 has been merged into 7.4.2.2 so
that the knowledge item under reference 7.4.2.2 now reads: Be
aware of the possibility of receiving unsolicited e-mail and the
associated dangers of infecting the computer with a virus by opening an
unrecognised mail message, an attachment contained within an unrecognised
mail message.
- Section 7.4 syllabus reference 7.4.2.1 addresses guidelines and
regulations associated with the use of email. This now reads:
Understand the guidelines and regulations on using email such
as sensitive content, phishing, identity theft, and common business rules
and regulations.
- Section 7.5 syllabus reference 7.5.1.3 has been amended to include
consideration for potential problems when trying to receive emails with
attachments. This now reads: Open and save a file attachment on
a location on a drive and consider potential problems
when trying to receive an attachment such as: file types, automatic
anti-virus settings, network settings.
- Section 7.5 syllabus reference 7.5.3.1 has been amended to include the
use of netiquette and formatting techniques. this now reads:
Create a new message using netiquette and
formatting tools such as font, style and colour changes, layout, bullets and
indents.
- Section 7.5 syllabus reference 7.5.3.6 has been amended to include
consideration for potential problems with sending attachments. This
ensures that potential issues with attachments are covered both in sending
and receiving of emails. This syllabus reference now reads:
Attach a file to a message and consider potential
problems when trying to send attachments such as file sizes, file types,
anti-virus restrictions, network restrictions.
